A device that reinvents the phone and, the same day, the company itself: Apple Computer simply becomes Apple.

The story

On January 9, 2007, at Macworld in San Francisco, Jobs announced «three revolutionary products»: a widescreen iPod, a phone, an internet communicator. Then the reveal: they were a single device. It was the iPhone, «five years ahead of any other phone».

The same day the company dropped the word «Computer» from its name and became Apple Inc.: the signal that the future was consumer electronics. The first iPhone, on sale from June at $499, had neither an App Store nor copy-and-paste.

The App Store arrived in 2008 and changed everything; the iPad followed (2010), then Apple Watch (2015) and AirPods. In 2018 Apple became the first listed US company to be worth one trillion dollars.

Trivia

Three products in one
Jobs «teased» the audience by listing three separate devices before revealing they were a single one. The room erupted.
No copy and paste
The first iPhone couldn't copy and paste text, had no App Store, and ran on the slow EDGE network. All of that came later.
Out with «Computer»
On January 9, 2007, «Apple Computer Inc.» became «Apple Inc.». It wasn't the first time they'd tried, but this time it was definitive.
An app store
The App Store opened in July 2008 with around 500 applications. From there an entire economy grew — and the way we use phones today.
One trillion
In August 2018 Apple became the first listed US company to surpass one trillion dollars in market value.
