History

The iBook was perhaps the most anticipated Apple computer ever. Destined for the same consumer market as its older sibling, the iMac, the iBook completed the 2x2 consumer/professional/desktop/portable matrix that Steve Jobs had illustrated in detail more than a year before. The iBook actually possessed a certain number of semi-revolutionary features for a machine in this low-end range. It was the first Mac to include AGP-based graphics and included a handle, a feature rarely seen in laptops. The iBook was the first Mac released using the Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) logic board, which allowed Apple to standardize most of the logic board components across all product lines. The most exciting feature of the new iBook was the inclusion of AirPort, a wireless connection system based on existing industry standards. AirPort allowed a maximum of 10 iBooks to connect to a single base station, which could then be connected to an existing ethernet network or a standard telephone line. At the price of $1599 USD, the iBook cost $900 USD less than Apple's least expensive professional PowerBook. The iBook received a minor revision in February 2000, when the logic board RAM was increased to 64 MB and the hard drive was brought to 6 GB.
