History

The MacBook replaced the existing 12 and 14-inch iBook models and the 12-inch PowerBook, completing the transition of Apple's laptop computers to Intel processors. The MacBook was distributed in a newly designed case, built around a 13.3-inch "glossy" LCD panel, and incorporated numerous system improvements from the previously announced MacBook Pro. Two unique features of the MacBook were a magnetic closure system with no moving parts and a redesigned recessed keyboard. A potential disadvantage of the new MacBook was that its graphics chipset used a portion of main memory, reducing the RAM available for system operations. The MacBook was distributed in three configurations. The entry-level model, with a 1.83 GHz Core Duo processor, 512 MB of RAM, a 60 GB hard drive, and a combined CD-RW burner/DVD-ROM drive, was sold for $1,099 USD. The mid-range model, with a 2.0 GHz Core Duo processor, 512 MB of RAM, a 60 GB hard drive, and a CD-RW/DVD±RW SuperDrive, was sold for $1,299 USD. Finally, a high-end model was distributed in a black case (the first black Apple laptop in more than five years). It improved upon the mid-range model with an 80 GB hard drive and was sold for $1,499 USD.
