History

On October 12, 2005, Apple announced at the "One more thing..." event the fifth-generation iPod, characterized by the ability to play MPEG-4 and H.264 videos with resolutions up to 640 x 480 and 320 x 240 respectively (videos purchased from the iTunes Store are limited to 320 x 240). The new models were available with 30 and 60 GB capacities at the same prices as the previous generation, respectively $299 and $399 USD. Equipped with a 65,536-color (16-bit) screen, with a 320 x 240 transflective QVGA TFT display, it was able to display video on an external television via the optional AV cable, which connected to the headphone minijack and split into composite video and audio output connectors with RCA jacks. It was also possible to display video on an external television using iPod AV or S-video cables with the universal iPod dock.
