History

Announced in September 2006, the Apple TV represented Apple's first official entry into the set-top device market (prototypes of a never-commercialized decoder based on a PPC 603 processor dating back to the late nineties occasionally resurface). Running a customized and closed build of Mac OS X (based on version 10.4.7), the Apple TV allowed streaming of audio and video content from any computer equipped with iTunes on the local network, serving as a single FrontRow-type interface for all computers in the home. In addition to audio and video content over the network, the Apple TV could also play selected videos from YouTube (re-encoded in h.264) and movie trailers from Apple's website. The Apple TV could be connected to any widescreen television via HDMI connector or component video, supported both analog and digital audio through RCA connectors and optical S/PDIF, and supported resolutions from 480p to 720p. The 40 GB model was sold for 299 US dollars, while a 160 GB version was available on order for 399 US dollars.
