History

Introduced in August 1995, the PowerBook 5300 was the first PowerBook equipped with a PowerPC processor and the first to include a replaceable storage bay in sleep mode. Available in multiple screen configurations and in 2 RAM/HD configurations, many 5300s arrived defective upon receipt (this was the main cause of Apple's reputation for defective products in the mid-1990s). It also included an infrared transceiver for wireless connectivity. The 5300 8/500 at 100 MHz sold for $2,300 USD. The 5300cs at 100 MHz, with dual-scan color display, sold for $2,900 USD for the 8/500 configuration and $3,700 USD for 16/750. The 5300c with active matrix color display sold for $3,900 USD for the 100 MHz 8/500 model and $4,700 USD for 100 MHz 16/750. The fully equipped 5300ce 32/1.1GB at 117 MHz sold for $6,800 USD.

• The PowerBook 5300, launched in August 1995, was the first PowerBook with a PowerPC processor and the first to include an innovative hot-swappable drive bay during suspension, anticipating the modularity of modern computers. • Many PowerBook 5300 units arrived at customers defective (Dead On Arrival), so much so that this issue represented the main cause of the poor reliability reputation that Apple acquired in the mid-1990s. • The model was so advanced that it included an infrared receiver for wireless connectivity, an extraordinary feature for the era, yet the highest price reached $6,800 with 32MB of RAM and 1.1GB of hard disk.
