History

Announced in October 1996, the PowerBook 1400 represented a partial response to numerous questions regarding recent PowerBooks. Powered by the same 603e processor at 117 MHz as the 5300 model, the 1400 was the first PowerBook to include an internal CD-ROM drive (6X). The slot for the interchangeable drive in sleep mode could also accommodate various other storage options, including MO and Zip drives. RAM was provided in stackable modules (another world first for PowerBook), allowing up to 64 MB of memory. The 1400 also included an internal expansion slot for video-out or Ethernet cards, and two PC Card slots that could accommodate two type II PC Cards or one type III PC Card. Faster versions were also released featuring a small L2 cache and an 8X CD-ROM drive.
