History

The iMac G5 brought the power of the G5 to Apple's consumer desktop computer line. Housed in a completely new enclosure that resembled Apple's Cinema Display line, the iMac G5 was a masterpiece of miniaturization. The chassis was only two inches thick, yet it contained a considerably faster and more advanced machine compared to its G4-based predecessor. In addition to a 64-bit G5 processor, the iMac G5 also included a significantly faster memory bus, improved graphics for the entry-level model, double the hard drive space for the high-end model, and a new audio port that also served as an optical digital audio output. The iMac G5 was initially available in three configurations: 17" LCD display/1.6 GHz/80 GB hard drive/256 MB RAM/Combo drive/$1,299 USD, 17" LCD display/1.8 GHz/80 GB hard drive/256 MB RAM/SuperDrive/$1,499 USD, and 20" LCD display/1.8 GHz/160 GB hard drive/256 MB RAM/SuperDrive/$1,899 USD.
