History

The PowerMac G4 (Digital Audio) was the first speed increase for the PowerMac line in over a year. The G4 (Digital Audio) owes its name to a new integrated amplifier, designed to drive USB speakers, along with the conventional line output with minijack. The G4 (DA) included a series of architectural improvements, including a 133 MHz bus, 4 PCI slots and a 1 GB/s main memory bus. PCI throughput was improved by eliminating the PCI bridge (the main memory controller now communicated directly with the PCI bus). The G4 (DA) was marketed with two new types of G4: entry-level models were equipped with the PPC 7410 processor, a lower power consumption variant of the 7400. High-end machines were equipped with a PPC 7450 processor, which in addition to an integrated 256 KB L2 cache, featured four Altivec units ("Velocity Engine"). The PowerMac G4 (DA) was launched in four configurations: the 466 MHz configuration included 128 MB of RAM and a 30 GB hard drive, priced at $1699 USA. The 533 MHz configuration included 128 MB of RAM and a 40 GB hard drive at $2199 USA ($2499 USA for the dual-533 model). The 667 MHz configuration included 256 MB of RAM and a 60 GB hard drive at $2799 USA. Finally, the 733 MHz configuration included 256 MB of RAM, a 60 GB hard drive at $3499 USA. The 733 MHz model was equipped with the innovative new "SuperDrive", capable of reading and writing both CDs and DVDs.
