The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are smartphones developed and marketed by Apple. They represent the eighth generation of the iPhone, successors to the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, and were launched on September 19, 2014. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus feature larger displays of 4.7 and 5.5 inches respectively, a faster processor, improved cameras, enhanced LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity and support for a mobile payment solution based on near-field communication. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were replaced as the flagship devices of the iPhone lineup by the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus on September 9, 2015.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus received positive reviews, with critics considering their redesign, specifications, camera, price and battery life improvements over previous iPhone models. However, some aspects of the design were criticized, including the plastic bands on the back of the device for the antenna that otherwise interrupted the metallic exterior, and the standard-sized iPhone 6's screen resolution lower than other devices in its class. The iPhone 6 sold extremely well, making it the best-selling iPhone model and the most successful smartphone up to that date. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus supported iOS 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 before being discontinued by iOS 13.
The phones were subject to several hardware issues, including susceptibility to bending under high pressure, and as a consequence of this lack of rigidity, the internal hardware of the touchscreen was subject to losing connection to the phone's logic board. Additionally, some iPhone 6 Plus models experienced camera issues, including some with malfunctioning optical image stabilization or other defects in the rear cameras.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were moved to the mid-range position in Apple's iPhone lineup when the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus were launched in September 2015. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were discontinued in most markets on September 7, 2016, when Apple announced the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Their role as entry-level iPhone was assumed by the first-generation iPhone SE, launched on March 31, 2016. The iPhone 6 was re-released with 64 GB of storage in 2017 as a mid-range/budget iPhone.
