History

Announced in September 2006, the Apple TV represented Apple's first official entry into the digital set-top box market (prototypes of a television box based on PPC 603 never commercialized date back to the late nineties and occasionally resurface). Running a closed and customized version of Mac OS X (based on v10.4.7), the Apple TV allowed streaming of audio and video from any computer equipped with iTunes on the local network, serving as a unique FrontRow-style interface for all computers in the home. In addition to network audio and video, the Apple TV could also play selected videos from YouTube (re-encoded in h.264) and movie trailers from Apple's website. The Apple TV could be connected to any widescreen television via HDMI or component video, supported both analog and digital audio via RCA and optical S/PDIF outputs, and supported resolutions from 480p to 720p. The 40 GB model was sold for $299 USD, while a 160 GB version was available on order for $399 USD.
