History

On September 12, 2012, Apple announced the iPhone 5. It features a 4-inch display, an increase from the 3.5 inches of its predecessors. The device maintains the same pixel density of 326 pixels per inch found in the iPhone 4 and 4S. The iPhone 5 is equipped with the A6 SoC processor, a chip 22 percent smaller than the A5 in the iPhone 4S and twice as fast, doubling the graphics performance of its predecessor. The device is 18 percent thinner than the iPhone 4S, with a thickness of 7.6 mm, and is 20 percent lighter at 112 grams. The iPhone 5, together with the iPod Touch (5th generation) and iPod Nano (7th generation), features a new dock connector called Lightning, which replaces the 30-pin Apple Dock connector introduced in 2003 by Apple on the iPod (3rd generation). The Apple Lightning connector has eight pins and all signals are digital. This new connector is smaller than the previous one, helping to make the iPhone 5 thinner than its predecessors. Apple Lightning cables feature duplicate pins on two sides of each connector, so they can be inserted in either direction. Various accessories are available to convert the Apple Lightning connector to the previous 30-pin Apple Dock connector or USB.
