History

The PowerBook G4 (15" FW 800) was probably the most anticipated PowerBook up to that point. Since the announcement of the "Aluminum" PowerBooks in 12 and 17 inches in January, there had been speculation about when a similar 15-inch PowerBook would appear. The PowerBook G4 (15" FireWire 800) was released in two configurations. The 1.0 GHz model, equipped with 256 MB of RAM, a 60 GB hard drive and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, was priced at $1999 USD. The 1.25 GHz model, with 512 MB of RAM, an 80 GB hard drive, an AirPort Extreme card, a backlit keyboard and a CD-RW/DVD-RW SuperDrive, cost $2599 USD.

• The 15" PowerBook G4 with FireWire 800 was the most anticipated model in history, as users had been waiting for months for an intermediate version between the 12 and 17 inches announced in January. • The base version cost 1999 dollars with a 1.0 GHz processor, while the top-of-the-line model reached 2599 dollars thanks to the enhanced 1.25 GHz processor and the SuperDrive with DVD writing capacity. • Only the most expensive version included the backlit keyboard and AirPort Extreme card, premium features that distinguished the luxury model from the entry-level one.
