History

On August 4, 2020, Apple updated the 27-inch 5K iMac with Comet Lake processors, AMD RDNA architecture GPU, T2 security chip, 1080p FaceTime camera, Bluetooth 5, improved speakers and microphones, and standard solid-state drive (SSD) units. 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and nano-textured glass, similar to the Pro Display XDR, are available as upgrade options. All models include non-replaceable and soldered SSDs, while the updated 4TB and 8TB models include an expansion slot for a second SSD. The 21.5-inch versions from 2019 remained available but received only minor configuration changes with standard SSD, while higher-capacity Fusion Drive were available as made-to-order option, and hard drives were no longer available. The 2020 update marked the end of hard drives in standard configuration on Macs, as the 21.5-inch iMac was the only Mac still using them. The 27-inch model was discontinued on March 8, 2022, following the announcement of the Mac Studio and the 27-inch Apple Studio Display.

• In 2020 Apple definitively eliminated traditional hard drives from standard Macs, as the 21.5-inch iMac was the last model to still use them in its base configuration. • The 2020 27-inch iMac introduced nano-textured glass, the same premium technology found in the Pro Display XDR, available as an upgrade option along with 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. • The 27-inch iMac was one of the few Apple models with the ability to expand the SSD through a second internal slot in the 4TB and 8TB configurations, a rarity in Apple's design philosophy.
